Sherwood Forest Walking & Social weekend
Overview
Overview: Another great weekend with Steve and Arlene Dell in a wonderful part of the country, this time we will be discovering the lovely Sherwood Forest and Clumber Park; Autumn is a great time of the year for this weekend as many of the trees should be changing colours, giving spectacular views. There will be wooded and open areas as well as lakeside and riverside walking.
The walking will be easy to moderate as the area is quite flat. The walk on the Saturday is around 7 miles and Sunday is around 6 miles.
We stay at the Clumber Park Hotel & Spa. It has leisure facilities, plenty of free parking. We have a great package – Dinner, Bed & Breakfast both nights.
The walking programme
Saturday: Todays walk is directly from the hotel and explore Cumber Park, which is a beautiful expanse of wood and heath land covering more than 3,800 acres managed by The National Trust. There is a countless variety of wildlife and over 120 types of trees.
The walk will be around 7 to 8 miles and will include a variety of scenery including Hardwick village (a pretty village originally built for the labourers), the famous avenue of lime trees (planted around 1840; its the longest such avenue in Europe), the lovely Clumber Lake and of course plenty of colourful autumnal woodland.
Sunday: A short drive takes us to Edwinstowe and into the heart of the Sherwood Forest. Starting at the visitors’ centre and the famous Major Oak (it is between 800 and 1,000 years old and local folklore says Robin Hood used it as a shelter). The walk has areas of woodland, some great sweeping avenue views and the return follows a lovely riverside path. The walk will be around 6 miles.
The social and après walking
Evenings: We have dinner at the hotel both evenings. Steve will look into running a quiz on one of the nights (depending on the availability of a function room.
Sunday: After the walking we will have the option of a Sunday Lunch before heading home.
There are several social options if you aren’t a walker of wanted to mix and match walking with social activities. Rufford Abbey, Southwell (Minster and Workhouse), Creswell Crags to name a few.
