Beginners Horse Trek with Afternoon Tea
Overview
Charnwood Forest Alpacas is set in a 110 acre farm and is one of the first, and largest alpaca farms open to the public in the UK. They are passionate about sharing the wonderful personalities of not just their alpacas, but all of the animals at the farm. They offer numerous different animal experiences which we plan to try with our first experience upon horse back.
Today will be the perfect experience for a small group of 4 of us to ride together through their picturesque farm and then enjoy a well earned afternoon tea. You will be assisted by their experienced handlers who will help you to make the most of your time at the farm whilst building a bond with your horse and enjoying the ride. Following the introduction, you will then take part in a 50-minute session of off-road hacking, accompanied by your handler, around their 110-acre farm.
Hacking is a term given to the light exercise that is given to horses, so you can rest assured that the ride won’t be too challenging or vigorous. Instead, it’s an opportunity to enjoy the countryside and get a taste of what horse riding has to offer. There will be plenty of photo opportunities along the way so you can look back on your visit and the memories you made.
Charnwood Forest Alpacas were recently awarded Tripadvisors Travelers' Choice Award in 2025 and have an impressive 4.8 star rating over 4000 reviews, so Spice can't wait to try them out.

A bit about Charnwood Alpacas - The story begins over 10 years ago, when owner Chris decided he had spent enough time climbing the corporate ladder after several years as a Managing Director, and was ready for a change. Starting out with five female alpacas, Chris began the journey of becoming a successful alpaca owner, learning everything there is to know about caring for, showing, breeding and raising awareness about these lovely animals.
Not long after, the owners of Morden Hall Alpacas, a 55-strong herd on a charming 30-acre farm, were looking to retire. Chris recognised this as a fantastic opportunity to take everything he had learned so far and got in touch. Morden Hall were impressed by his dedication and passion for the breed, and were delighted to pass the torch to him! Chris decided one challenge wasn’t quite enough, and so in 2011, we opened our doors to the general public too!
In 2016, we started our next big adventure - our move to Scamhazel Farm. With the herd growing all the time and the number of guests on the farm rising, we took the plunge and moved the alpaca herd and a few more animal friends to our new home on the Derbyshire/Leicestershire border. With 110-acres of space in the heart of the beautiful English countryside, we’ve been here ever since, while our herd grows and we’ve welcomed lots of new animal friends! At the most recent count, we have more than 300 animals living on the farm.
