Sue's Sunday Walk - Kingsclere & Watership Down
Overview
Kingsclere, once a royal manor, is home to St Mary’s church which dates back to Norman times. Inside can be found a 12 th century Purbeck marble font, colourful stained glass windows and the 17th century tomb of Sir Henry and Lady Bridget Kingsmill.
The weather vane on top of the tower is known as ‘The Bedbug’ (legend has it that King John suffered from bedbugs while staying at a local inn.
The Balding family are the current custodians of Park House Stables, which we walk past at the start of the walk.
The village of Hannington has a large village green which hosts a large pyramid roofed well head built to celebrate Queen Victoria’s diamond jubilee.
Watership Down has enjoyed almost legendary status since the author Richard Adams, born in Newbury, chose it as the setting for his best selling story of the same name, based on the adventures of a group of rabbits.
At the end of the walk we can enjoy refreshment at a local pub.
