Sunday Walk: The Plantations and Wooded Areas of Haigh Hall
Overview
This walk begins by exploring Crawford's Wood in Aspull before heading in a south westerly direction towards the Leeds and Liverpool Canal which is crossed. It then gradually descends towards Bottling Wood and Haigh Lower Plantations and through a beautiful wooded valley containing the River Douglas before ascending up to the park gates and the affluent suburb of Marylebone in Wigan.
The walk returns to the wooded areas of the country park via Hall Lane and will visit Lady Mabel's Wood, a stretch of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal before gradually ascending through Haigh Upper Plantations to Haigh Hall itself. We understand that the screening from the building walk has now been removed so it will be nice to see the Hall again! A leisurely lunch will be spent close by the hall where there are toilet facilities and shops which includes a bakery that sells lovely local pies that Wigan is renowned for.
After lunch, the walk heads along Copperas Lane and will briefly visit the historic local red windmill before returning to the car park via Crawford's Wood.
