Sunday Walk: South Pennine Water Trail
Overview
Today we are discovering Hollingworth Lake and the canals of Littleborough with this delightful walk.
We hope to see plenty of bird life around the lake so you might want to bring your binoculars for this one and a bit of food for the ducks wouldn’t go amiss.
With scenic views over the Pennines the circular route takes in some of the best countryside this area has to offer. The initial section of the route offers easy walking through the Easlees Valley, Littleborough and along the Rochdale Canal towpath.
The middle stretch is a little more taxing however the effort is worth it with breath-taking views over Rochdale and beyond.
Location & Itinerary
Grade 4/5 due to one fairly steep incline: 5 1/4 Miles - please refer to the Ramble Grading page HERE which also gives you a list of recommended items to bring with you.
Exit the M62 at J21 and head towards Milnrow on Elizabethan Way (A640). After just over ½ mile, turn right onto the B6225, which heads to Littleborough. Hollingworth Lake will be sign posted (brown sign) and is approx 2 ½ miles along the B6225. Do not mistake the sailing activity centre for the Hollingworth Lake Country Park Car Park! You pass the sailing and activity centre, continue along the road until you reach a sharp bend. Turn right on to Rakewood Road in front of the Wine Press pub then left in to the Hollingworth Lake Country Park Car Park – it is pay and display so please remember to take money with you. If you do have to go through the main car park and park in the overflow part then it is worth stopping in the layby to pay for your parking ticket as it is a bit of a walk up to pay and back.
