Spice does Christmas Lunch at Birmingham College of Food
Overview
This is one of our favourite events!
For the first time, the College will be offering a special Christmas lunch during December so we just had to book it!
Restaurant at Birmingham College of Food at Summer Row campus at University College Birmingham, is a world-class training restaurant nestled in the city’s historic Jewellery Quarter, a 10-minute walk from the city centre and at the heart of the Colmore Business District.
We will get to experience award-winning, exceptional value food and drink in a contemporary setting while, at the same time, supporting highly-talented students on their journey to professional excellence.
We have the choice of a 2 course or 3 course meal from their fixed price menu. Please see the 'Food and Drink' section for the Christmas menu.
The restaurant not only holds a coveted AA Highly Commended College Rosette but is a Centre of Excellence in food and beverage service, patisserie and confectionery, fish and shellfish and butchery and game and has a People 1st Gold accreditation for excellent hospitality training.
The professional training kitchens have been praised by the likes of Gordon Ramsay, used by famous chefs for competitions and been visited by the likes of Marco Pierre White.
A Message from the College: At University College Birmingham we truly value your custom and support in helping develop our Front of House, Chef and Bakery students. We appreciate your patience and invite you to talk to the students about their courses and career aspirations – in return all we ask is for understanding when things may not go quite right, or when lecturing staff must teach in front of you. Enjoy the experience.
After our meal you may want to visit 'Cakes and Bakes' the onsite bakery shop. The shop sells a variety of fresh breads, including craft breads and speciality loaves and rolls, buns, cakes, tarts and biscuits, chocolate bars and lollies, as well as ready meals, all produced by the trainee chefs and bakers under expert professional guidance.
Includes
- A 2 or 3 course meal depending on your booking.
- A warm welcome form your Spice voluntary coordinator.
Extras
You will need to pay for your drinks on the day. Please order from the bar and pay as you go if possible. Why not match your food with something from the college's extensive wine list?

Host & Everything Else
When we arrived, we were told that this was the first service of the new school year, so all the students were quite nervous! We were introduced to our server and orders for meals were taken. It was interesting to see how the students are supported in their learning. The food was lovely, although there was some confusion over whether we got veg or not! Bread was plentiful and bottles of water kept appearing for us. Despite being informed prior to our booking they did struggle to cope with our one member who was GF. Despite them being most apologetic it was disappointing. Hopefully it was a good learning point for the students though! I think if you are willing to accept that the students are, in essence, practising on you, then you will have a lovely lunch. Great value for money. Oh, and you can’t get out of the college without a visit to the Cake and Bread shop…fabulous!!
Really enjoyed the meal at the college of food. The joining details were detailed and easy to follow.
The venue was nice like a real restaurant. It was good having a round table as we could all speak to one another easily. The menu was really good, too much choice!
The food was an excellent standard for the price we paid.
An enjoyable afternoon spent with a lovely group of people.
Thanks for being an excellent host.
Really enjoyed lunch at BCF, the food was amazing and very good value for money, was really interesting to see the young students learning their trade and Wendy was perfect hostess, would highly recommend this event,
I thoroughly enjoyed the meal yesterday; it was clear a lot of attention and effort had been put it into making the food and meal as delicious and presentable as possible. The service was excellent and I would love to go back at the end of college year to see the progress of these future stars of hospitality and the kitchen.
