Peak District Walk: Tideswell & Litton
Overview
Starting from the village of Litton, once a centre for stocking making, we descend through Tansley Dale into Cressbrook Dale to pass Peter's Stone or Gibbet Rock where the highwayman Black Harry was gibbeted as a deterrent.
Crossing the road at Wardlow Mires and the story of Hannah Oliver, cross over to Silly dale and on to Great Hucklow.
Then we follow the quiet lane to join the footpath at High Rake to continue along Tideswell Rake these follow the vein of the old lead workings, passing the new open cast workings and Tides Low.
We descend the quiet lane through Brook Bottom and the bridleway of Water Lane, next through the small hamlet of Wheston to pass the Hall and meet the Limestone Way and the footpath into Tideswell, one of the Padley Martyrs lived and taught here and the church of St John is known as the Cathedral of the Peak.
Finally we return over footpaths to the start at the village of Litton

Location & Itinerary
Our Sunday walks are always popular and we go out all weathers and all through the year. All walks in the Peak District need to be classified as moderate due to the terrain. Easier Moderate Walks are generally half day only around 6-8 miles.
Full day or Harder Moderate walks are normally not more than 10-12 miles although sometimes slightly more in summer months.
If you've not done much hill walking recently regardless of your general fitness level, we'd recommend starting off on one of these shorter half day walks, typically of around 6 miles before tackling our slightly more serious full day walks.
The meet time is generally 10:15am for a start at 10:30am but some differ so please check the individual walks
