Walking with Linda: 9 mile, Whyteleafe to Coulsdon walk & Kenley WWII Aerodrome visit

Join Linda for this, 9 mile walk from Whyteleafe to Coulsdon with Kenley WWII Aerodrome Visit.

Please meet outside the front of Whyteleafe railway station by 09:50 ready for a prompt 10.00 departure.

The morning walk includes a couple of hills for us to then admire the beautiful views across the Surrey Hills. We will stop for a morning drink and snack break (bring whatever drink and snack you want with you) on a ridge top admiring the view before following an old Roman road and crossing over an 1884 railway viaduct.

At Kenley Aerodrome, we'll walk the perimeter path punctuated with remembrance plaques of those who flew from this airfield and lost their lives in the vital WWII Battle of Britain. Kenley Aerodrome RAF Squadrons lost 44 personnel in the famous battle.

We will then walk to the Wattenden Arms pub (under new private management) where we will stop at about 12:45 for a pub lunch (at your own expense). The Manager Stewart, tells me that the food is now even better than it was when we visited in 2023

After lunch we'll walk through an ancient woodland and up onto Farthing Downs, designated an area of archaeological interest due to it's Roman landscape and Saxon tumuli. The ridge top walk allows us to admire beautiful views in all directions and leads us to Coulsdon South railway station where we can catch our trains home.

We will stop in the park beside Coulsdon South railway station for a cup of tea at the end of the walk if you wish.

Please bring drinking water, money to buy lunch and any other drinks and snacks you may want.

Please dress for the weather on the day (and bring a golfing umbrella if it is expected to rain!).

Please check your transport times, and for any engineering works, at least the day before the walk and allow some contingency time for delays. The walk needs to depart on time for the comfort and enjoyment of those who have arrived on time. Thank you.
