Europe’s highest ski resort, surrounded by spectacular 3,000m peaks

At an altitude of 2,300m, Val Thorens is the highest ski resort in Europe and as part of the huge Three Valleys area, it is undoubtedly one of the very best. The resort has been designed to offer doorstep skiing from practically wherever you stay and has a village feel around a compact centre. The height of Val Thorens means long hours of sunshine, an unrivalled snow record and great skiing for all grades.

The Vallée des Belleville, including Val Thorens, has received the Flocon Vert label, demonstrating the resort's dedication to environmental preservation and highlighting its dedication to sustainable development. When you arrive in Val Thorens, the best way to get around is by foot, bus, or skis - many of the hotels are in great locations, so the pistes are easily accessible, no matter where you are. To keep the slopes skiable, all snow groomers use a more sustainable fuel and are equipped with a snow coverage gauge device to determine where artificial snow coverage is required. After a day on the slopes, many of the buildings are well insulated to keep the heat in and have smart heating controls to reduce the use of energy. Solar panels are also used to generate renewable electricity.

Val Thorens is known for its fantastic snow quality throughout the winter season, with the majority of the skiing being above 2000 metres. Beginners will enjoy being closer to home on the fantastic nursery slopes, while the more advanced will enjoy the variety of different graded slopes throughout the resort. Being part of the largest interlinked ski area there are no limits on where you can go. Those with a full area pass have the opportunity to explore the wider Three Valleys ski area, a snow lovers paradise, with efficient links between Meribel, Courchevel and Les Menuires.

Location & Itinerary

There are nearly 150kms of pistes in Val Thorens Valley alone, and the big skiing holidays attraction of course are the links with the neighbouring Méribel and Courchevel valleys, with 600kms of pisted skiing in all, plus limitless off-piste areas.

Beginners are well cared for here, with numerous easy village slopes, and after a few days’ tuition will soon be moving up the mountains to higher altitude to ski blue runs.

With the full area pass intermediate skiers can easily make it over into Méribel valley and beyond to Ski Courchevel, for a fantastic full day round trip. If you don’t want to go that far, then the blues and reds around Les Menuires and St Martin de Belleville are just as enjoyable and generally less busy.

Advanced skiers are spoilt rotten, for choice, with steep blacks, plentiful powder at this altitude, and bump ski runs all over the area, including the famous run from Cîme de Caron at nearly 3200m. Snowboarders have a dedicated snow-park near the Funitel lift. There’s also some good skiing up and over the Cime de Caron into the so-called Fourth Valley at Orelle in the direction of Maurienne.

Travel & Stay

Val thorens les arolles exterior

Renovated in a contemporary style, Hotel Les Arolles offers a modern take on mountainous atmosphere and is placed in the heart of the highest ski resort of Val Thorens.

A usual crowd pleaser for keen skiers, Les Arolles has a great location on the side of the piste and is close to the Campagnoles and Musaraignes lifts so hitting the slopes early to explore the Three Valleys ski area couldn't be easier. The hotel also has a large bar area and south facing terrace for some après ski fun after a fulfilling day in the snow.

Relaxation facilities - What better way to rejuvenate for another day on the slopes than visiting the spa. Open everyday, except Saturday morning, you'll have access to the benefits of a sauna, whirlpool baths and hammam. Or go the extra mile and immerse yourself in a massage or beauty treatment (extra cost) that uses a selection of natural cosmetic products that are all locally produced in France - whatever takes your fancy.

Evening entertainment - Cosy up for an evening in at the lovely hotel lounge and bar which often has a live pianist, share your stories from your day on the mountain with a delicious cocktail and marvel at the mountains surrounding you.

Passport validity

For UK passport holders your passport must be:

  • Issued less than 10 years before the date you enter the country (check the ‘date of issue’)
  • valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave (check the ‘expiry date’)

You must check your passport meets these requirements before you travel. If your passport was issued before 1 October 2018, extra months may have been added to its expiry date.

ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System)

The rules of travel to most European countries have changed. Starting in the first half of 2025 UK citizens are required to have a travel authorisation to enter 30 European countries for a short stay.

ETIAS travel authorisation is an entry requirement for visa-exempt nationals travelling to a number of European countries. It is linked to a traveller’s passport. It is valid for up to three years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first. If you get a new passport, you need to get a new ETIAS travel authorisation.

With a valid ETIAS travel authorisation, you can enter the territory of these European countries as often as you want for short-term stays - normally for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. However, it does not guarantee entry. When you arrive, a border guard will ask to see your passport (and other documents if required) and verify that you meet the entry conditions.

NB - There is no official date for the ETIAS currently confirmed but when it is introduced it will be your responsibility to ensure that you have arranged this. We will update everyone when the ETIAS is required with information on how to apply for this online.

Travel Insurance

Please ensure that you have adequate personal travel insurance to suit your requirements in place before you travel. Spice Escapes have arranged a scheme with Staysure who are fully authorised and regulated by the FCA (firm reference number 663617) full details of which can be found on the FCA website www.fca.org.uk. For an instant online quotation please click here.

Global Health Insurance Card

A UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) gives you the right to access state-provided healthcare during a temporary stay in the European Union (EU).

UK-issued European Health Insurance Cards (EHICs) are still valid and offer the same cover as GHICs in the EU.

Once your EHIC has expired, you’ll be able to replace it with a GHIC.

NB – A GHIC/EHIC is not a replacement for travel insurance!
