Sunday Walk: Hilbre Islands
Overview
A walk with a difference which walks out to some islands in the middle of the Dee Estuary. First we stroll up onto Caldy Hill, a wildlife haven that gives extensive vistas over the Dee estuary and then descend from the column on this hill (formerly used by returning sailors as a navigation aid) through gentrified housing into West Kirkby. We then walk out on firm sand to the Hilbre Islands before returning to the cars. The tides are perfect on this date, so don’t miss your chance! Many species of seabird can be seen and grey seals frequent the island beaches. We will have a picnic lunch en route and if the weather is warm we will have a prolonged refreshment stop on Hilbre Islands to soak up the atmosphere, so please bring your sandwiches. Please also bring your walking boots for the occasional slope to gain the views.
Facilities: Toilets a third of the way round.

From Mcr proceed to end of M56 (indicated only by an end motorway sign – M56 now merges seamlessly into A550). Exit left at the next junction onto A540 signposted Hoylake. Follow A540 for 12 miles thru various traffic lights and roundabouts until reach roundabout signposted Caldy to left. Take this and wind your way down for 0.8 mile through Caldy village to the tight bend by the church. Take the left turn 0.2 mile after the church into Croft Drive West and soon reach a T junction at end where you turn right and after a short distance turn right into the car park (free), just before the disused railway bridge (that no longer exists). CH48 2JL is the closest postcode for SatNav. Do not use CH48 2JX as this directs you away from the car park into a small road nearby called Ashmore Close.
The What3words for the car park is https://w3w.co/nights.months.provide - you can use the What3words app to navigate directly to the walk.
