Learn about the history of London transport as you take a tour round London Transport Museum’s Depot in Acton, west London. With a knowledgeable volunteer guide, see highlights from their collection, from historic vehicles, signs, ceramic tiles, original posters, ephemera, ticket machines, maps with many unusual and unexpected items!
Discover the story of London’s public transport from its horse-drawn beginnings, taking in rare and unusual vehicles along the way, as well as pioneering engineering equipment, and a glimpse into their vast collection of transport items.
Depot Discovery tours take approximately 2 hours.
Topics that may be covered in a Depot Discovery tour (please note that this is a working depot. Objects and vehicles can be moved at short notice, so it’s not guaranteed that all these topics will be covered):
- An introduction to the Depot
- Historic buses, including horsepower, motor buses such as B Type, and early examples of ‘hybrid’ technology, RT Type and Routemaster
- Historic trams
- History of the London Underground, including examples of rolling stock
- Maps and signage
We will arrange in advance what train we will get to London so those who want to can travel together
