Theatre -Richard II - Bridge Theatre Thursday Matinee
Overview
Join us as we watch Richard II who is charismatic, eloquent and loved by his friends. And a disastrous King – dishonest, capricious and politically incompetent.
Echoing down the centuries is the perennial problem: how to deal with a ruler who has a rock solid right to rule but is set on wrecking the country he leads.
Shakespeare’s subtle, ambiguous and beautiful play finds feudal England on the cusp of modernity, as a divinely sanctioned monarch is confronted, in the figure of Henry Bolingbroke, by the hard-headed pragmatism of real authority.
Richard II is played by Jonathan Bailey, whose past work includes Bridgerton, Fellow Travellers, Cassio in Nicholas Hytner’s National Theatre production of Othello and Edgar to Ian McKellen’s King Lear. He has also won an Olivier Award for his role of Jamie in Company and is Fiyero in the upcoming Wicked movie.
About Bridge Theatre
Nicholas Hytner and Nick Starr spearhead the Bridge Theatre. Having worked together at the National Theatre for over a decade as artistic and executive directors, Hytner and Starr formed the London Theatre Company as part of their efforts to open the largest Off-West End commercial theatre. The 900-seater auditorium is very adaptable and allows shows to be presented in end-on, thrust and promenade formats.
Production aside, the theatre was praised for its abundance of ladies toilets and its on-site kitchen which, among other things, provides treats freshly baked on site during the interval.
This modern Theatre means their is really is not a bad seat in the house. Its located on the South bank right next to Tower Bridge so has very good transport links with London Bridge Station , Borough Tube on the South bank and Tower Bridge and Tower Gateway on the North bank all within a short walk from the Theatre
